Rankings of UK Universities by Research Quality:
Understanding where a university stands in the pecking order of higher education especially in terms of its excellency by their research quality is a vital piece of information. The assessment in the UK, which is undertaken on the behalf of the four UK higher education funding councils in England, Scotland, Wales and North Ireland, is termed the Research Assessment Excercise (RAE). RAE submissions from each subject area are given a rank by a subject specialist peer review panel. The rankings are used to inform the allocation of quality weighted research funding (QR) each higher education institution receives from their national funding council. Previous RAEs undertook in 1986, 1989, 1992, 1996, 2001 and 2008. The most recent results, under a different flag named The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, were published on 18 December 2014.
